Tapeswaram Kaja Price per Kg, and How to Buy It Fresh

Tapeswaram kaja is the sweet most people ask us about first, and the question that usually follows is simple: how much does it cost, and how much should I buy? Here is a plain answer.
Tapeswaram kaja price per kg
At Bhaktanjaneya Sweets, Tapeswaram kaja costs ₹300 per kg. It also comes in smaller packs: 250 g for ₹80 and 500 g for ₹150. A 1 kg pack has about 22 pieces, so each kaja works out to roughly ₹14.
Prices across shops vary a lot, and a much cheaper kaja is usually cheaper for a reason. The two things that cost money in a kaja are the fat it is fried in and the time it takes to fold the dough properly. Ours is fried in pure ghee; you can read why that matters in our piece on pure ghee and vanaspati.
How many to buy
For a family of four, a 500 g pack is about 11 pieces, enough for two evenings. For guests or a small gathering, 1 kg is the safe choice. For gifting, one 500 g pack per household is generous without going overboard. For functions, plan on one or two pieces per guest and see our bulk orders page for kilo rates.
How to tell a good Tapeswaram kaja
Break one in half. A well-made kaja shows clear, thin layers that separate cleanly. It should be crisp on the outside and juicy inside, with syrup in the layers rather than pooled on top. If it bends instead of snapping, or tastes of old oil, it is either stale or was not fried right.
Colour helps too: an even golden brown is what you want. Very pale kaja is under-fried and goes soft quickly; very dark kaja has been fried too hot.
Keeping it fresh at home
Store kaja in an airtight box in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, and it stays good for about 15 days. Do not refrigerate it, because the cold makes the syrup crystallise and the layers soften. If a piece loses its crunch, a few minutes in a warm oven brings it back.
If you are curious about what makes this sweet different from every other kaja, we have written about that too: the folding, the frying and the syrup all play a part.
