Bobbatlu: How Many Pieces You Get, and How to Serve Them

Bobbatlu, also called bakshalu or puran poli, are thin flatbreads stuffed with a sweet filling of chana dal and jaggery and cooked with ghee. They are the sweet of Ugadi and Sankranti in many Telugu homes, and the question we hear most is how many to order.
How many bobbatlu in a pack?
Our 250 g pack of bobbatlu has 5 pieces and the 500 g pack has 10, so each piece weighs about 50 g. The 250 g pack is ₹90, the 500 g pack ₹180, and a full kilo is ₹360.
For a family meal, plan on one or two bobbatlu per person. A 500 g pack serves a family of four or five comfortably. For a festival lunch with guests, a kilo is the safer choice.
How to serve them
Bobbatlu taste best warm. Heat a tawa, add a few drops of ghee, and warm each one for under a minute on each side until soft and fragrant. In the microwave, 15 to 20 seconds is enough; any longer and they turn chewy.
Serve them with a spoon of ghee on top, the traditional way. Some families pour warm milk over them; others eat them with a little extra ghee and nothing else.
How long they keep
Bobbatlu are a cooked, filled sweet, so they don't last as long as fried sweets. Keep them in an airtight box, in the fridge in warm weather, and eat them within a few days. Always warm them before serving.
If you are planning a festival menu, our Sankranti and Ugadi guides list the other sweets that belong on the plate.
